Back when I was in my senior year of high school, I panicked
as the SAT test approached. I had taken the PSAT as a junior and did terribly,
and historically performed poorly on most standardized testing. Bring bright
had nothing to do with it. I just tested poorly, and I later discovered I was
not alone.
When I received my initial score, it was 880 -- the average
score for that year, according to the New York Times. I felt defeated and
stupid. All that nervousness and I was average. Meanwhile my friends were
getting higher scores between 1100 and 1600. I was crushed. What did my
friends know that I didn't know?
A year later I decided to take the SAT again -- this time with
more practice -- and more nervousness -- and I achieved a 990 -- the average
score for that year, too. Ah, if I only I had known Darrell Causey, Jr. back
then!
Darrell Causey, Jr. knows kids better than most. As a high school teacher, he’s heard all of the excuses for not being properly prepared for the SAT (Standard Achievement Test). Says Causey, “Kids need to know the SAT is important, it’s easy to prepare for, and they shouldn’t be scared to take it.”
In his new book, “How to Prepare for the SAT in 14 Days or Less”, Causey -- a 30-year veteran of the classroom, and a math and science teacher and coach at The Briarwood School in Houston, Texas -- has demystified the SAT and presents a simple, proven method to prepare for the exam.
Causey explains, “Most students and their parents have a misconception about the SAT. While many tests check to see what you already know, the SAT is designed to test your ability to use what you already know.”
His “14 Day Plan” teaches the student how to prepare and practice for taking the test. This plan familiarizes the student with the SAT style, teaches a simple process to develop a well-written essay quickly and easily, debunks the myths about the SAT, explains an effective method for guessing the answers to more challenging questions, and most importantly, explains how to relax the night before the test.
Causey adds, “Most kids simply choke on the SAT because they don’t know what to expect or how to properly prepare for it. I’ve taught and used my “14 Day Plan” in my classrooms for decades, and hundreds of students have gone on to pass the test with flying colors, get into the college of their choice, and go onto have very successful careers.”
Nominated eight times for Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Causey has provided SAT tutoring to students for over 20 years. In the past, he studied math, sciences and theology at Vanguard University and Loma Linda University. Causey graduated from American Bible College and Seminary. He currently lives in Atascocita, Texas with his wife and seven children.
