If you have a laptop, you need to protect it whenever you are traveling.
There are lots of notebook case manufacturers to choose from, but from my
experience the best case manufacturer is Targus.
They are not only good-looking cases, but they are built for the road. Highly
functional, they have pockets and holders for everything, and the newest cases
feature built-in "clamshells" to protect and cushion your laptop
during travel.

After my new Dell
XPS 1730 laptop arrived I immediately realized the 17 inch laptop was
not going to fit into my existing laptop roll aboard suitcase. In a panic I
ran out to the store to shop for a new laptop bag. I wanted something that
would be functional and stylish yet also provide the type of protection I
needed on the road. My laptop cost me $2500.00, so I wasn't going to trust my
hardware investment to just any notebook case manufacturer. I knew I needed a Targus
bag.
Back when I was in charge of sales automation and 2000 laptops
at WorldCom, I made sure every laptop we purchased for our sales force was
wrapped in a Targus bag.
So off I went to the local store and did some comparison
shopping. The cost of laptop bags goes up sharply as the size of the laptop
increases. I found bags that ranged in price from $50.00 to over $150.00, and
I've seen fine leather bags costing hundreds of dollars, too.
The key thing to remember is that it is more important for
your bag to protect your laptop than it is for the bag to look beautiful. I've
seen many a beautiful leather bag and laptop get ripped and scratched and
ruined after just one plane trip. Ka-ching. Your money just got flushed down
the drain.
What you want is a bag made from durable ballistic fabric that
is scratch-proof and water-proof and sturdy. Something that is going to take a
beating when you travel. You need something with lots of pockets to hold all
of your laptop peripherals like mice and USB drives and laser pointers and
files.

The Targus
17 inch Platinum Notebook Case (CPT401D) comes with all of this and it
looks pretty darn attractive, too. Best of all, it has a special cushioning
system called a clamshell. Between the layers of the fabric it has big plastic
barriers that sandwich your laptop to prevent breakage to the screen and
laptop casing. I could see this bag being squeezed into tight overhead spaces
on a plane without damaging your laptop.
